Irish dance levels can vary significantly between organizations, making it challenging for dancers and parents to navigate when participating in open-platform competitions. We have prepared a guide with aims to simplify the comparisons when enrolling in open platform competitions.
Each Irish dance organization has its own terminology and structure for levels, but they often align in progression.
Here's how the levels translate:
Beginner Level: Across most organizations, "Beginner" is the entry point for dancers. IIDA, CRN (Bunghad), Chomhdhail, RTN, and WIDA all recognize this level under the same or similar terms.
Primary Level: Known as "Primary" in IIDA, WIDA, and RTN, this level is referred to as "Ullmhúchán" in CRN and "Beginner B" in Chomhdhail.
Intermediate Level: Dancers progressing further will encounter "Intermediate" in IIDA and WIDA, "Meánghrád" in CRN, and "Beginner C" in Chomhdhail. This level aligns with "Novice" in RTN.
Preliminary/Prizewinner Level: At this stage, levels diverge slightly in terminology. IIDA uses "Preliminary," while RTN and CRN use "Prizewinner" and "Ardghrád," respectively. WIDA and Chomhdhail identify this as "Open" and "Pre-Open."
Open/Champion Level: The highest level, commonly known as "Open," is consistent across organizations, though RTN uses "Champion" for its designation.
By understanding these comparisons, dancers can better navigate competitions in various Irish dance organizations. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced competitor, knowing your equivalent level ensures smooth transitions and fair competition experiences.
